From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2--This award-winning team returns with a third story of farm animals with ambition. Duck is tired of doing his chores (mowing the lawn and grinding the coffee beans), and decides to hold an election to replace Farmer Brown. When he wins, Duck quickly realizes that running a farm requires too much hard work, and sets out to run for governor. With the help of the hens, and speeches "that only other ducks can understand," he eventually ends up running the country. Executive office gives him a headache, however, so Duck returns to the farm to work on his autobiography--on a computer, with the typewriter from Click, Clack, Moo(S & S, 2000) in the wastepaper bin next to him. Lewin's characteristic humorous watercolors with bold black outlines fill the pages with color and jokes. Cronin's text is hilarious for kids and adults and includes a little math and quite a bit about the electoral process. The animals, who have no verbal language that humans can understand, are empowered by the use of the written word, and the subliminal message comes through loud and clear--one can almost hear youngsters thinking, "Watch out grown-ups! Just wait till I learn to read."--Jane Barrer, Washington Square Village Creative Steps, New York City Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Ducks are popular, whether they hang out with typing cows or shill for AFLAC business risk insurance. In this book, Duck reappears for our delight. There are many chores on a farm, and Farmer Brown is tired. Sheep have to sweep, Moo'ing Cows Mow, and duck has many things to do including coffee prep. So what's a disgruntled duck to do? Run for office, of course. Those who can, do; those who can't, run for office. He is the kindler, gentler candidate. When he wins in a landslide, or piggish mudslide, Duck finds out that RUNNING the farm is no easy task. So he hits the road and runs for governor, finds chores there also, and then runs for higher office. He even plays sax on late night tv. All the while, with clever drawings that will also appeal to adults, Duck finds out that no job is without chores, until the final page.
We love this book! It is hillarious and more fun than any presidential election that my students can imagine! We have read and read and read this book and looked at every detail of the pictures. That's what is so great about this book: that you get something new from it with each reading of it. It is a favorite that is requested over and over. Our lesson learned is that we have to work hard in all things but. We can also have fun doIng it!
As a teacher this is one of my favorite books for teaching about government and especially how someone can rise though the ranks and become a president. Although this is a silly example, it has lots of teachable points to help little ones understand the election process. A great buy for kiddos since this is an election year!
I recently ordered this book from Amazon for my son's 8yrs birthday party and he was so happy! My son is in 2nd grade and he read this book in school, but he wanted to have it so he could read it as many times as he wanted because he loved the story. As he opened his gift my son right away pointed out the funny pictures. He actually read it that same night before going to bed. The shipping was fast. I received this book in two days. I was also very pleased with the price being that this book in most stores is at an average of $20 dollars and I got it through Amazon.com for less than $14!! Thanks Amazon!
Duck for President toys slightly with the formula that made the other children's books like Giggle, Giggle, Quack and Click Clack Moo: Cows That Type that are so charming. This book has many references for adults like a Nixon pose, etc. My seven-year-old daughter loves it, but I wonder about its staying power. Will she still want to read it with me in a month like we do the other books in the series, which I rated higher?
Comical way to portray the campaign trail. Glad he realizes at the end that the job he thought was so easy was harder than he thought. He goes back to the farm to do the job he was meant to do all along.
Really cute book! If you like "Click clack moo cows that type" you'll love this one!
I read this book to my daughter when it first came out in ~2004. It was a beloved bedtime story. Unfortunately I lost the book in a move. When our next child came along a couple years ago, I *had* to get a new copy! I'm keeping this copy close to hand no matter how many "coffee stains" may get on the book!Highly recommended!!!
This is a silly book. Silly in a good way. Silly in any way adults and kids can both appreciate. Duck starts out on Farmer Brown's farm, where his jobs are to take out the trash, mow the lawn and grind coffee beans. At the end of each day duck finds himself covered in bits of grass and espresso beans. So he decides to run for Farmer and he wins. But he discovers that running the farm is hard work, so he runs for governor. He wins by just a few votes. But he discovers that being governor is hard work, so he runs for president. He wins by just a few votes but he discovers that being president is hard work. He sees a help wanted ad for a duck who can mow the lawn and grind coffee beans, so he retreats to the farm to write his memoir. The book is filled with political jokes parents will get. On the title page Duck raises his arms and holds his hands in victory signs like Richard Nixon did so many years ago. His poster in running for Farmer says he's running for a "Kinder, Gentler Farm," not far from George H. W. Bush's slogan.Duck does all the things a good candidate should do. He even "gave speeches that only other ducks could understand." And every time he wins a new job, he finds he's covered from head to toe in gunk at the end of the day, the gunk just changes with each job.As kids follow Duck's races, they learn what's involved in a political campaign, and how important each vote is, and one would hope they learn that if a duck can aspire to the highest office in the land, so can they! The illustrations are very funny. They keep the story moving with their humor. They have details the reader won't notice on the first or second or third reading. This means the book continues to be funny, time after time.
