Well done! I really learned how to weave(plait) a bracelet! The book design,format is very good..fully deserves five stars!!.After thinking about my review and looking at other reviews, i thought i would add a little more info. I recommend, in addition to Mr Widesses excellent book, a little known pamphlet type book locally published in Hawaii, currently listed as"out of print unavailable" The books long title is"Kupuna Maunakeas Lauhala Preparation and Simple Weaving"(1994) written by an expert Hawaiian weaver.This is not listed in the bibliography. I suggest a new inexperience weaver request a copy from the Hawaii State LIbrary. The main branch has several copies for loan, #746.41. There are several simple projects for the beginner,and has a very friendly style.This book would supplemen(not replace!) Mr. Widesses book. Later update on bibliography: The Univ of Hawaii just published an informative,somewhat scholarly review of the art of Lauhala: Ike Ulana Lau Hala (by O'Neil,Keawe etc) #746.42099 in library..This is a Hawaiian studies approach to Lauhala. History and culture, but no instructions.
I'm from Hawaii and learned there but this book is better than any book I have from Hawaii. Fills in the info that other books leave out. Even tells you how to make a simple lauhala cutter. Has everything you might need to make a Hawaiian bracelet or headband and shows you clearly, step-by-step in great photos how to do almost any pattern. Even how to write names on the bracelet.
I have made all of the bracelets for friends and a few for myself.Instructions with photos are very easy to follow.Get this book if you really want to learn this technique.

This book is great. It has great pictures, which make it easy for the visual learner. The lauhala stripper is so easy to build, if you are in a place with a craft store. This book makes it so even younger children could weave a braclet, from the simple to the complex. Plus the explanation of the prep in order to get the lauhala ready to weave is very good.
I enjoyed going through the book. Learning to make your own tools is great and easier to do than expected. Also having alternatives to the native Hawaiian materials is a plus for those who do not have access to Lauhala.
I spent sometime in Hawaii and loved the local crafts that find all around there. This book does a descent job of showing one how to create some of those crafts.
The instructions & photographic illustrations are clear & concise. The author includes historic information as well as ideas for material substitution, & practical applications. The reader actually gets the feeling of being at a workshop on the beach. If you are a "weaver", this book is not only a great addition to your reference library but what better reason to spend time at the beach!
