With a new device in-hand, I need a teacher. The author is readily available for E-mail inquiries with excellent support. I went through the book a page at a time, like a textbook, and learned so much more than I might have on my own. Good book.
Save your money. The current version of iTunes (12.1.2) is so different from what is shown in this book that this book is of little or no help at all. Also, this book is supposed to be "For Dummies" but the author leaves a lot unexplained or says it's explained under other chapters and headings. Unfortunately some of those headings have been changed or moved and you can't find out what the author is talking about. I can't even find out something simple like why I can't update my iPod with a CD I just copied into iTunes. All in all a very frustrating book.
As I am a newbie in the tech generation I am finding this book to be an immense help. It doesn't assume I know things I don't know. I can't really give it as good a review as I would as my laptop, which is the iTunes part of my system, is currently unavailable. I am going through the book chapter by chapter.
I hate electronic updates. I am from a previous generation, and I find that the trade manuals were written by techies for techies. I need something in plain english. And thank goodness someone else thought that was a good idea too!
Although there is some guidance for the Nano this book is mainly for the Touch. You have to go through a lot about the Touch to glean a little about the Nano. Guess what? I have a Nano. It should have been half price for Nano owners.
This is a disappointing manual. I'd hoped for a well-written "user friendly" beginners manual that would explain as you go. Instead, on one page he brought up four unknown (to me) subjects in one paragraph without explaining them other than to say that if you wanted to know what they were, look in Chapter 8 or Chapter 22 or whatever chapter they were in. However, he didn't indicate the page. So you were guaranted 5 minutes of frustration trying to find it before you gave up in disgust. The index was not helpful in finding things that I looked for. Another time, he named a series of icons, without discribing what they did or supplying me with a picture. I felt confused and irritated. After a while I became annoyed at his quips and puns that failed to either amuse or enlighten. Not a book for a "dummy". I'm not sure if an expert would like it either because I think the index is flawed. The Chapter titles are generally "jokes". so you couldn't often tell what the Chapter discussed. The online manual for Itunes and the Ipod is far more helpful. I'm sure Mr. Bove knows his subject. He fails to remember that his job is not to show his brilliance, parade his wit, or rattle off features of the product without explaining in (hopefully) simple terms that us "dummies" can understand.
Yes, if you know absolutely nothing about iTunes/iPods then this might help. I got this because I have trouble understanding the technical side of music and was looking for something to explain that in simpler terms. This book does NOT do that. In fact I didn't find it any better than the "help" function of iTunes.
All my questions answered without a phone call! This is a great reference book. Whenever I have a question I just have to take it off the shelf.
